As a child I had guinea pigs. To this day, I adore them! The seemingly never ending variety of colors and hair styles,their chatter and scooting about.
Jonathan had hamsters. He built a tube system for his hamster colony that ran along the top of the walls, spanning his entire house. This was before systems like that were commonplace and was a clear sign of his future career in engineering.
Both are wonderful introductions to having pets.
There is solid science of the benefits of owning pets, learning responsibility and growing to love these critters.
