As a child I had guinea pigs.  To this day, I adore them!  The seemingly never ending variety of colors and hair styles,their chatter and scooting about. 

Jonathan had hamsters.  He built a tube system for his hamster colony that ran along the top of the walls, spanning his entire house.  This was before systems like that were commonplace and was a clear sign of his future career in engineering. 

Both are wonderful introductions to having pets.
