A traditional dance of the Māori people, hakas are part of welcome ceremonies, weddings, birthdays, and other celebrations. There are also hakas traditionally preformed before battle.
Haka spring from the legend of Tane-rore, the son of a god [Tama-nui-te-ra] and one of his wives [Hine-raumati]. The shimmering appearance of the air on hot summer days is said to be Tane-rore dancing for his mother and is represented by the tremor of the hands in haka.
